Parent Meeting Notes 2/1/2010

Gear

*Your child needs to have red and blue singlets to compete. Reversible singlets are okay. Your child will also need wrestling shoes, headgear and hankie or paper towel for a blood rag. Finger nails need to be kept short during practices and tournaments.

Practices

*Please have your child to practice on time. It is very important for your child to do the stretches and warm ups at the beginning of practice to help prevent injury.

*Barrier foam should be applied before practice and showers should be taken after practice. If singlets are worn to practice they need to be laundered between practices. We do not want to spread germs.

*Parents are welcome in the wrestling rooms. In the Jr. High wrestling room please feel free to assist your child, however please only help with moves that the coach has them working on or has already been shown to the kids. In the high school wrestling room please just observe your child. By the time the kids are in the high school practice room they need to be able to follow the coaches’ instructions on their own. Please try to keep talking to a minimum in both rooms so that the kids can hear the coaches.

Tournaments

*Make sure you are on time to tournaments. Most tournaments do not allow you to weigh in late unless there are extenuating circumstances.

*State tournaments are pre-registration events. Registration forms will be sent home from practice with a note saying when they need to be returned. If you miss the date for the form to be turned in you will not be able to participate in these tournaments. State tournaments are for wrestlers 7 years old and older.

*For all tournaments you can tell which color singlet your child should be wearing by checking the brackets. Brackets are usually hung up in hallways close to the wrestling area. For folkstyle tournaments the wrestler on the top line each pairing wears red, for freestyle and Greco tournaments the wrestler with a dot next to their name wears a red singlet.

Fundraising

*Our fundraisers are very important to the continuation of the club. The fundraising helps to pay entry fees to the Top of the Rock Tournament, state tournaments and for travel assistance for national and regional tournaments. In the last year we have been able to buy some new equipment for the club and were able to help the high school with a new competition mat.  The new mat is very light and will make setting up for our tournaments a lot easier. We would like to be able to continue to assist our kids and the school in the future and would like to help even more. We ask that each wrestler for Top of the Rock sells three booklets of raffle tickets and each family sells 6 booklets. Prizes will be awarded for the top 3 sellers with a minimum qualification of 4 books for one wrestler.

Referees and Pairers

*We need parent volunteers to help with refereeing and pairing. Each club needs to provide referees and pairers at tournaments to qualify for team points. Last year our club could have taken first place at the State Folkstyle Tournament, however we did not have enough officials and were not awarded first place.

*Training is provided through clinics to become referees or pairers. You must get your cards on-line and need to pass a background check. At the end of the season you can be refunded your card and background fees if you have officiated at enough tournaments. The board will use its discretion to decide which officials have participated enough.

*The benefits of being an official are that every effort is made for you to be mat side for your child’s matches and the club will pay for your rooms for state tournaments and will assist with travel expenses for regional and national tournaments.

Coaches

*The club has designated coaches who will do their best to be at local tournaments. However, these coaches volunteer their time and may not be able to make all tournaments. If you are interested in being able to coach your child during his/her matches then you need to have a coach’s card. Coaches cards are purchased on-line and you must pass a background check. You are also required to attend a state sponsored coach’s clinic if you would like to be mat side at any tournaments.

*If you want to coach your child during tournaments please let the club coach know before the tournament starts. That way the coach can make sure you are at the mat before your child’s match starts. If the coach does not know beforehand, they will go ahead and start the match without you.

*Your child must have a coach on the mat to compete. If a coach does not come to your child’s mat right away, please have your child let the table help know that a coach from Top of the Rock needs to be paged to that mat. We have a lot of kids who compete and they may have to wait for a coach. There are usually dads in the stands who are willing to help coach your child.

Sportsmanship

*Poor sportsmanship will not be tolerated from our wrestlers, coaches or parents. If you are a witness to any poor behavior please let a coach or board member know so that we can take immediate action.

Important Information

*Top of the Rock team pictures will be taken Tuesday, March 9th at 6pm. Please mark your calendars; more information will come closer to that date.

*Most information that you need to know will come by e-mail. E-mails were sent out to everyone that we had an address for last week, if you did not get an e-mail we either do not have you address correct or do not have an address.

*All e-mailed information will be posted to our website either on the front page or under Latest News.

*For important information we will also send notes or forms home from practice.

Please remember that the coaches and board members are volunteers. We all do our best to give the kids a fun and encouraging environment. We are always looking for help, so if there is something you think you would like to help with or if you have any ideas on how we can make things better for the kids please let a board member know.
